Intercession

“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people.”

1 TIMOTHY 2:1 (NIV)

What if your prayers carried someone else?

While prayer often functions as a personal thing, it does not have to be that way. Intercession is the act of praying on behalf of someone else and a need that is happening in their life. Intercession can be done on behalf of an individual, like a friend or family member, a group of people, like coworkers or leaders, or on behalf of entire groups of people, like nations or our world.

THE PRACTICE

Start by paying attention

Intercession could be centered around any topic: health, salvation, comfort, direction, and even broad support. Wherever we long to see more of God’s Kingdom brought here to earth, we can practice intercession.

To practice intercession, we must first start with paying attention. Where do you notice someone sharing a need with you? When you discover those, write the need down, keep a list of reminders on your phone, or stop right there and lift up this need before God. He knows all about it, and can make a way even in the darkest of situations.
