A regular rhythm of reading a passage each day
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
PSALM 119:105 (KJV)
Daily Bible reading for many is an anchoring piece to a growing relationship with Jesus. Especially for our tradition, this is a hallmark of a robust life with God. Daily Bible reading is most often paired with a daily prayer time to create what many of us call daily devotions or daily quiet time.
When it comes to practicing daily Bible reading there is no perfect way. The best way to practice daily Bible reading is to do it in a way that is consistent and sustainable for you and your current life rhythm. With most daily Bible routines, there are a few best practices for organizing your daily space with God.
Time
The first thing you must decide when planning daily Bible reading is when are you going to do this? Traditionally, there has been high value placed on a morning with God, and there is immense value in beginning the day connected and rooted in God’s Word.
The right time though, is the right time for you. Families, jobs, season of life, and personal temperament all play a role in finding what works.
Topic
The second consideration needed for daily Bible reading is what will you read? There are many different options, and no one size fits all plan. Some popular options include the Bible in a Year plan. A daily pattern to allow you to read the entire Bible in a year. Other ideas include reading an entire book slowly. Or a New Testament Passage, Old Testament Passage, and Psalm. The options are endless, just choose something that fits where you’re at in this season and where you want to be.
The best plan will walk you through different parts of the biblical narrative, exposing you to the entire biblical narrative, one day at a time.
Response
Lastly, a daily Bible reading time isn’t complete without a moment to pause, reflect, and respond to what you just read. After you have taken time to read, spend some time prayerfully reflecting.
- What stood out to you?
- What did you notice?
- What do you want to tell God?
- What is the Spirit inviting you into today as a response?
You may find it best to journal your thoughts, to speak with God silently, or even to share what you experienced with a close family member or friend.
