Listening to the Bible

Hearing Scripture read aloud, on audio or in a group

“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

ROMANS 10:17 (KJV)

The canon of Scripture has this unique paradox. The words that make up our Bible are most regularly read by us as individuals, but for most of history, these same books would have been read aloud for people to hear. For most Christians, the Bible would have been a listening, not a visual experience.

Listening to the Bible then is a time tested, sacred and devotional practice, meant to help us engage with the biblical narrative in a way that is different than reading.

There are many ways to practice this. Many Bible apps and websites have audio versions. There are audio links within YouTube, and even families and small groups can read passages out loud together over a meal or gathering.

Whether you feel stuck in a rut and want to try something different, or you struggle with comprehension or focus while reading words on a page, consider listening to the Scripture for a change.
